the hard way

Life can take you in many directions. It can toss you and turn you around until you feel like you’re lost, made directionless in an ever-changing sea of experiences, clinging to a raft made of whatever is easiest for you to grab onto - politics, drugs, identity, anger, romance…

At some point, you realize that living life really is a bit like sailing a ship. And like a ship’s meandering course across an ocean, when regarded closely, all you can see are the waves crashing against you and the wind tearing at your sails as you try to move forward in any direction you can.

You had to go backwards a bit to get around that reef that was poking out of the shallow water. You went north instead of west for a while to avoid that oncoming bad weather. All the twists and turns and storms that you’ve weathered during the journey seemed like they’d capsize you - and a couple of times, they nearly did.

But eventually, when you’re able to pull your view out far enough, you begin to see that this little ship’s path formed a straight line from where you began, directly to your destination. You were never lost - you were learning how to navigate choppy waters and making adjustments as necessary. You’ve finally made it to dry land - this might not be the land that you expected to find when you first set sail, but now you’ve know enough that you can make any place feel like home because you’ve learned that home is wherever YOU are.
