The Shaggs
Finding things in places you never thought to look
OMG! I never thought that I would ever find this record in my whole life but I randomly came across a comic book store that was having a sale and they had it there!
If you’ve never heard The Shaggs, check them out HERE.
I’m not the type of person who goes for perfection in art. The truest beauty in humanity is found in the imperfections, in my opinion, and this record is probably the epitome of imperfect.
By almost any of the usual metrics that ppl use to judge art & music, this is objectively bad stuff. The players aren’t together, the singing is out-of-tune, and the songs are rough and rudimentary at best.
But there’s a sweetness to the songs, and a level of authenticity that remains unmatched by any artist since, if you ask me.
It’s not a record that I’ll blast while driving down the road in the summertime but whenever I’m in a musical rut, frustrated by writer’s block, or otherwise just getting tired of listening to auto-tuned vocals, perfect loops, and overly-compressed recordings, this record shines as a reminder that expression comes first and everything else comes second.
